As They Might Be Giants expanded from live performance with a tape recorder to a full backing band, taking their new, fuller sound into the studio was a natural move, and John Henry, their first full length album with live musicians, documents this moment in TMBG’s evolution. The band arranged the album while woodshedding in upstate New York at the legendary Bearsville Studios. While John Henry’s organic sound and fuller production initially took many by surprise, show-stopping staples like “Meet James Ensor,” “No One Knows My Plan,” “Spy,” and “The End Of The Tour” have stood the test of time.

about

Years back, through "a secret experiment in human happiness," we shared a download of the demos to the John Henry album. The recordings were made with Patrick Dillett and an evolving live band over a few long session days at Brooklyn’s Excello Studios. Upon reflection, it seemed the quality of the work really called for a proper release. So now a proper, full-length album is finally available.

This album is available exclusively from Idlewild Recordings and will not be sold elsewhere and will not be posted to streaming sites.
